Visiting Stonehenge

by - 12:54:00 PM

During my visit to the UK, I knew I had to see Stonehenge. The history of the stones fascinates me, and their beauty is undeniable. It's one of Britain's most famous attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in Wiltshire, England, near the city of Salisbury.

Stonehenge is just a two-and-a-half-hour journey from London, making it an easy day trip. Each year, over 800,000 people visit the site.

The visitor center includes a gift shop and cafe where you can unwind with a coffee after exploring the stones. They offer a wide array of souvenirs; we picked up magnets, pins, postcards, and a book.

Adjacent to the visitor center are reconstructed houses where you can step back in time and experience life as it was 4,500 years ago.

Additionally, there are examples demonstrating how the stones were transported and their immense size, giving you a sense of their scale. Imagine having to carry these around.

Stonehenge stands out from other attractions due to the enigma surrounding it. The site features a circular formation of stones varying in height and width. The greatest mystery lies in how these stones were placed and by whom. Archaeologists estimate its construction occurred between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago, predating the Egyptian Pyramids. Among the numerous theories, one popular belief is that extraterrestrials erected Stonehenge, conceiving it as a temple for ancient peoples.

Stonehenge is a captivating and unforgettable destination. The stunning scenery surrounding the stones enhances the experience.

We opted for a tour from London to Stonehenge, which included a visit to Bath, offering great value. While it's possible to walk from the visitor centre to the stones, our tight schedule to catch the bus to Bath meant we used the complimentary shuttle service to and from the stones, after completing our walk around them.

These were some adorable sheep that were next to the visitor centre
