20 Free things to do in Melbourne Australia

With Melbourne being one of the countries largest cities there is something to do for everyone. It's packed with fabulous bars and restaurants. Also if you are from Melbourne sometimes its fun being a tourist in your own city.

For anyone wanting to visit and tick things off the bucket list but dont want to spend too much money this post is for you. Im here today to give you 25 free things to do in Melbourne. 

1. Visit the Australian Centre of moving images for the free permanent exhibition of 'Screen worlds.'

2. Roam around the Royal botanic Gardens and see over 10,000 plants from native to exotic.

3. Stroll through the Queen Victoria Market to find some great bargins and dont forget to get some hot jam donuts.

4. People watch at Federation Square. There is some times a pop up event that you can enjoy.

5. Take a stroll down St Kilda pier and keep your eyes open for Penguins when out on the pier. Also take a swim in port phillip bay.

6. Enjoy the views on Melbourne from some rooftop bars. You can get beautiful views over st patricks cathedral and so much more from these bars. The view is free but you can buy a drink to enjoy it.

7. Pay your respects to those fallen and served in wars gone by at the Shrine of Rememberance. You can go inside and explore the rooms and exhibition spaces. Also once you climb the stairs the views are incredible.

8. Visit one of the many Churches in melbourne including St Patricks, St Pauls and so many more. They are so beautiful and the architecture is incredible.


9. Stroll through Luna Park. While it doesnt cost anything to walk through the amusement park there are fees for going on the rides. It's great for the whole family.

10. Check out the world famous Flinders street station. Take photos from across the road on the corner of flinders street and swanston street to get an amazing image.


11. Ride the free City Circle tram to take you around the city. No ticket required and you can hop on and hop off anytime.

12. Wander through laneways for some amazing street art. Stroll down Hozier lane as well as AC/DC lane and so many others to see some world class street art.


13. Stroll through and have lunch in Fitzroy Gardens. From Spectacular flowers to ancient trees there is something for everyone.

14. Stroll through the NGV art gallery to see some amazing art and exhibitions.

15.  On Wednesday evenings enjoy strolling through the night markets at Queen Victoria Market.

16. Take a tour of Melbourne Town halls to learn about its architecural, social and political significance

17. See the rainbow coloured bathing boxes at Brighton beach, while having a stroll down Brighton Beach.

18. Stroll around Albert Park Lake, which is part of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix racing Track.

19. Check out the historic Shopping Arcades which are the hidden gems of the city. Block Arcade, Royal Arcade, Degraves Street and Centre Place.

20. See some Aboriginal Art at the Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square. Also While you at Fed Square you can also see the Koorie Heritage Trust Cultral centre where you can learn about Aboriginal history of this Area.

  5. Melbourne is such a great city! Besides viewing the incredible street art, I liked doing an urban walkabout and noticing the historic buildings right next to the ultra modern architecture. The juxtaposition makes Melbourne truly unique!
