Visiting Oxford Castle & Prison

by - 8:33:00 PM

Back in May 2019 I had the pleasure of visiting the Oxford Castle & Prison as I was Spending the day in Oxford on my trip to the UK for the month. It was so beautiful seeing this castle that I had only seen online. It's history is incredible.

The Castle and Prison is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the entire City, Also maybe even being one of the oldest as well. It has History dating back to the 11th century. We did a guided tour and it was amazing learning the history.

With the guided tour its starts in the gift shop we then headed through a small door leading to a steep and narrow winding staircase with 101 steps to the top of  St George's Tower, which had some incredible panoramic views of Oxford. Our tour guide was dressed in costume, that made the experience even better. We were told a lot about the history of the Castle and Prison, We then headed down to the 900 year old crypt of st George's chapel where we were told about the crypt as well as about king Arthur, we then headed down the prison corridors and cells to learn about some famous inmates, before we headed to the exhibition space where we learnt so much more.  There was so much in the exhibition space such as uniforms, more information about the prisoners, weapons they used to use etc. Around the room was a timeline of specific events that had happened since the Prison opened. It was amazing learning so much about the history. The tour ended after the exhibition space and we were free to roam the grounds. Outside in the courtyard was also beautiful.

As part of our ticket we also had access to the Mound, which had some steep steps and gradients. From the top of the Mound the views were incredible.

After that we stopped in the coffee shop for a coffee and a bite to eat before heading to check out the rest of Oxford.

We also took a stroll through the gift shop, which itself was incredible with all the souvenirs you could think of, and they also had shields, swords, keys and even some Harry potter souvenirs (Harry Potter in Oxford will be another blog post coming soon).

It was such a great tour. I love history so this was amazing.

If you are a history buff like I am, I highly recommend visiting Oxford Castle and Prison if you are ever in Oxford.

Well I hope you enjoyed my post, If you have any other questions leave a comment below.

Until next time
