Doune Castle

For those who know me, know that I am a huge fan of Outlander. So when we decided to take a trip to Scotland I just knew I had to visit one of the filming locations of Outlander. DOUNE CASTLE. also known as Castle Leoch in the show. On May 18th, 2019 that came true. Only an hour and a half train ride from Edinburgh, this castle is a must see for Outlander fans.

Doune Castle is located in Doune, Stirling. Apart from Outlander, the castle has also appeared in Monty Python and Game of Thrones.

We were staying in Edinburgh so we caught a train to Stirling and then a bus to Doune. We had to walk about 5 minutes to get to the actual castle but it was worth it. We also got to see the streets of Doune and they were beautiful as well (These will be in another post). Seeing this beautiful castle in real life was a dream come true. It was also on my bucket list ever since I started watching the show.
Going inside the castle felt like I was in Outlander. The places where the cast stood and recognizing the rooms to the scenes in the show. There was also a free Audio Tour that was included with the tickets. If we pressed certain numbers we would hear Sam Heughans (Jamie Fraser) Voice explaining some parts of the show and how they were created. It was so awesome. There was also some extra commentary of when Sam learned Gaelic. I recommend getting the audio tour because apart from the Outlander parts you learn a lot about the history of the castle and other information.

We spent quite a few hours at this castle taking photos and just embracing all of the history, and also fangirling because Outlander was filmed here. While most of the scenes were filmed in the studio. They were recreated from the rooms in this Castle. This castle was built in the 1300s so that itself was incredible. When we were there, there was scaffolding on the top of the castle because they were doing some restorations.

From the top window we overlook the fields that surround the castle. Which was also used in filming.  We walked around the castle on to a very steep hill, It kind of freaked me out a bit because below the hill was a river.

My dad also loved looking around the castle and hearing the history behind everything. Even though he doesn't watch the show he still loved the tour.

Well that is it for todays post. I hope you enjoyed reading this.

I have a lot more Travel posts coming soon.

I will have a few more photos below of the castle so enjoy.

As you can see during our visit there was construction happening, they were restoring part of the castle

How to get to Doune Castle from Edinburgh and Stirling.

Doune Castle from Stirling Bus Ride: The castle is just a 30-minute bus ride from Stirling getting off at bank street, then about a 5-minute walk to the castle.

Doune Castle from Edinburgh Train and Bus: From Edinburgh you get a train ticket to stirling then switch to the bus that goes to the castle.

There is free parking at the castle if you decide to drive there.

Until next time
