Doune Castle - How to get there from Edinburgh

by - 9:45:00 AM

For those who know me, know that I am a huge fan of Outlander. So when we decided to take a trip to Scotland I just knew I had to visit one of the filming locations of Outlander. DOUNE CASTLE. also known as Castle Leoch in the show. On May 18th, 2019 that came true. Only an hour and a half train ride from Edinburgh, this castle is a must see for Outlander fans.

Doune Castle is located in Doune, Stirling. Apart from Outlander, the castle has also appeared in Monty Python and Game of Thrones.

We were staying in Edinburgh, so we took a train to Stirling and then a bus to Doune. A five-minute walk led us to the castle, and it was absolutely worth it. The streets of Doune were just as beautiful (I'll share more in another post). Seeing the castle in person was a dream come true, especially since it's been on my bucket list since I started watching the show.
Inside the castle, I felt as if I had stepped into 'Outlander'. Recognizing the spots where the cast stood and the rooms from various scenes was surreal. The tickets included a free audio tour, which, when activated at certain points, played Sam Heughan's (Jamie Fraser) voice explaining parts of the show and their creation. It was incredible. There was also additional commentary about Sam learning Gaelic. I highly recommend the audio tour; it offers not only insights into 'Outlander' but also a wealth of information about the castle's history.

We devoted several hours to exploring the castle, capturing photos, and immersing ourselves in its rich history. It was particularly thrilling as it served as a filming location for Outlander. Although most scenes were shot in a studio, they were inspired by the rooms of this castle. The fact that the castle dates back to the 1300s is astounding in itself. During our visit, we noticed scaffolding atop the castle due to ongoing restoration work.

From the top window we overlook the fields that surround the castle. Which was also used in filming.  We walked around the castle on to a very steep hill, It kind of freaked me out a bit because below the hill was a river.

My dad also loved looking around the castle and hearing the history behind everything. Even though he doesn't watch the show he still loved the tour.

Well that is it for todays post. I hope you enjoyed reading this.

I have a lot more Travel posts coming soon.

I will have a few more photos below of the castle so enjoy.

As you can see during our visit there was construction happening, they were restoring part of the castle

How to get to Doune Castle from Edinburgh and Stirling.

Doune Castle from Stirling Bus Ride: The castle is just a 30-minute bus ride from Stirling getting off at bank street, then about a 5-minute walk to the castle.

Doune Castle from Edinburgh Train and Bus: From Edinburgh you get a train ticket to stirling then switch to the bus that goes to the castle.
